A new bar on Crossway?

May 31, 2020

An application has been made by Mr Engin Akin for ‘a premises licence for recorded music from 10.00 to 00.00 Mon to Sun, late night refreshment from 23.00 to 00.00 Mon to Sun and to authorise the supply of alcohol for consumption on the premises from 10.00 to 23.30 Sun to Thurs and from 10.00 to 01.00 am Fri and Sat’ at 5-17 Crossway.

Planning permission has already been granted for a block of flats with commercial use as a restaurant on this ground floor site, currently housing a car wash. The original planning application attracted considerable local opposition, not least because the applicant, Engin Akin, is the son of the owner of the Efes Snooker Club, Yasar Akin, which was stripped of its alcohol license by the police in 2012 on grounds including bad management (see this article in the Hackney Citizen)

Awkwardly situated between a major traffic junction and a bus stop, with relatively narrow pavements, and surrounded by residential accommodation, the location is less than ideal for a busy bar – especially in an area that is already oversupplied with licensed premises operating till midnight.

If you wish to object to this application, write to licensing@hackney.gov.uk with the address of the premises in the subject line.

Your objection is most likely to be taken seriously if it directly addresses the objectives of Hackney’s Licensing Policy. The four main objectives of the policy are:

• Prevention of crime and disorder
• Public safety
• Prevention of public nuisance
• Protection of children from harm.

The deadline for objections is June 3rd, 2020
